Frequently asked Questions

1.    Do you accept reservations? What about holidays and big parties? Brunch?

a.      No, we do not accept reservations. If you have a party of 25 or more and would like to book an event please email Betty the General Manager at portaloakland.betty@gmail.com

2.    Do you allow pets (dogs) on the patio? or Are you dog friendly?

a.      No, there are no pets allowed inside or on the patio.

3.    Do you allow kids at your bar?

a.      Portal is a restaurant with a bar, and we of course allow children on the patio and the inside of the restaurant.  (No one 21 or under can sit at the bar.)

4.    What kind of alcohol do you carry?

a.     We have a beer and wine license. We DO NOT SERVE hard alcohol. We carry soju, a Korean spirit that is 24% and we make our Mr. Pickles and other soju cocktails with.

5.    Do you have dessert?

a.      No, but you can go over to Pietisserie and grab a delicious pie until 8pm.

6.    Are you open Mondays?

a.      No, but we will open for Monday night football.

7.    What are your hours?

a.      Monday Closed

b.     Tuesday-Saturday 11am-11pm

c.      Sunday 10am-10pm

8.    What are you Happy Hour hours?

a.      Tuesday-Friday from 3pm-5pm

b.     Queer Beer Wednesday 3pm-9pm

9.    What is Queer Beer Wednesday?

a.      In Oakland we have a large LGBT community and we have several staff member ho identify with this community. At Portal we wanted to have one day a week to celebrate this and have the Oakland Community to unite. We offer Happy Hour from 3pm-9pm, which includes $3 pints. We also have a DJ on the patio from 7pm-10pm.  We also have GIANT JENGA set up so the whole restaurant can play!

10. When can we get bottomless mimosas?

a.      Bottomless mimosas are only severed during our full brunch service on Saturday from 11am-1pm and Sunday from 10pm-1pm.  We strictly stop pour at 1pm. If you have your name on the waitlist for a table you are more than welcome to start drinking your bottomless mimosas.  We have a black door on the patio that takes you to our waiting section, where you can sit on the ledge outside an take in beautiful Lake Merritt that is only a few yards away.

11. What time do you close for brunch?

a.      We stop seating brunch at 2:30pm. We sometimes have to stop taking names as early as 2pm based on how many parties are on the wait list.

12. Why do you stop brunch so early?

a.      At Portal we have a very small kitchen that takes at least 2 hours to switch from brunch to dinner. Please understand that we need the hours from 3pm-5pm to get ready for dinner service.

13. Can we smoke on the patio?

a.      Yes, but in designated area.  Please ask staff where permitting smoking area is located 

Frequently asked Questions

1.    Do you accept reservations? What about holidays and big parties? Brunch?

a.      Currently, we do not take reservations for our restaurant, for the most part. However, with anyone hoping to bring a large party in for brunch, people have three options.

- The best option, for fastest seating and service is to have your entire party arrive before we open to join the queue outside, and we seat immediately in order of the line first! The hosts usually check in with folks waiting on the line for large parties, so we can set up easier for you as you are seated. We open at 10am Saturday and 9am Sunday, so just arrive 10-15 minutes early and you are golden.

- If you do not plan on arriving early, you should send one of your party ahead to get the name/party listed on our wait list, which can run anywhere 30min-1hr for seating. Or we may have our wait list turned on through our yelp page online, which we use when business is slower to ensure people know the wait time is light, and so that they may enter their names in advance of arriving.

- If you want to avoid all that, and just have a large table reserved for a specific time. we will "hold" a table for you with the agreement that you buy a minimum of $500 (per table). One party of 10-12 fits one large table, so you and your guests would be responsible for a minimum charge of $500, including the tax and tip! If you are interested in this option, you may email us directly at portaloakland.lori@gmail.com to confirm the date and time. 

*You are most welcome to bring some decorations, and if it's a birthday, please feel free to bring some sweet treat as well, since we do not offer a dessert option on the menu.
